New to Canberra?
The Rotaract Guide to Canberra
Canberra is the Capital of Australia, located in the Australian
Capital Territory. It is a modern city with a population exceeding
300,000. Canberra is a planned city of formal buildings, wide
boulevards, masses of parks and a generous sense of space.
It is home to the Australian National Gallery, the Australian
War Memorial, Parliament House, the Australian Institute of
Sport, and a number of monuments and national embassies.
Canberra offers a lively cultural life and is also home to
six tertiary institutions: the Australian National University;
University of Canberra; Australian Defence Force Academy;
Australian Catholic University; Canberra Institute of Technology;
and the Australian International Hotel School.
The Snowy Mountains region and the southern beaches of New
South Wales are within a two hour drive from Canberra. Other
eastern seaboard cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane
can be reached by bus or plane. Roads are of an excellent
standard for private car travel. Bicycle paths are widespread
across the city.
Canberra is home to three sporting teams: ACT Brumbies, Canberra
Cannons and the Canberra Raiders.
There are four well developed seasons in Canberra.
- Summer is from December to February,
- Autumn from March to May,
- Winter from June to August,
- and spring from September to November.
There is no wet season and rainfall is usually spread evenly
throughout the year. Canberra is cold in winter with night
temperatures dropping below 0° Celsius. Day temperatures in
summer are as high as 35° Celsius with mild nights.
